American Medical Association Releases 2023 E/M Updates

These changes will take effect on January 1, 2023.

We are excited to share with you the recent updates that will be taking place for E/M CPT codes. The American Medical Association (AMA) CPT® Editorial Panel has approved and updated the guidelines for hospital services, emergency department visits, nursing facility services, home visits, and prolonged care services. These changes will take effect on January 1, 2023.

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) also supported this update and published its version of the latest updates in a newsroom article on July 7, 2022. With the updates, they have deleted some observation care codes, the annual nursing facility assessment code, and domiciliary and rest home codes. Some prolonged care codes and low-level consultation codes will also be deleted.

The most exciting part with the updates is, similar to the Office/Outpatient E/M guidelines, the level of code selection for these services will be based on medical decision-making or time. Emergency department visits will be based on medical decision-making only, not time. These E/M services include a medically appropriate history and exam when performed, meaning there is no switching between the two different guidelines!
